Apple, Google competition good for innovation

Business leaders have suggested that competition and co-operation between Apple and Google is good for innovation.

It has been suggested that Apple CEO Steve Jobs and Google boss Eric Schmidt were recently seen dining together at an American mall and a number of business commentators have said that this friendly rivalry could push the industry to continually come up with new ideas.

Speaking to Market Watch (MW), mobile phone software developer Fabrizio Capobianco said: "Its beneficial for both if they keep working together."

Apple and Google have previously locked horns in the smart phone market, with Apple launching the iPhone just after weeks Google’s Nexus One hit the market, but the two company’s also rely heavily on each other as a source of revenue.

Google is currently the default search engine installed on the iPhone and is expected to take up the same position on the iPad which will be launched next week in the US. YouTube, owned by Google, is also reportedly the iPhone’s most used video application.

New York iPhone/iPad developer Alex Cone claimed that the rivalry between the technology giants is positive for the industry and told MW: "Absolutely. It's driving computing forward. I am keeping toes in both ponds to see what's going on. I think some of the basic tools and ideas are simple enough that developers can go back and forth. This is one of the biggest and most interesting growth areas in computing and tech."
