Bosses get advice from business on-line tool

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has created a new online tool which gives bosses employment law advice.

The Which boss are you? program follows a study by the department (BIS) which categorises the type of boss a business has in terms of knowledge about their legal obligations. The confidential new tool also identifies four distinct types of behaviour which relate to management of employment law.

This device has been designed to help business leaders identify what type of boss they are and help them to develop themselves and improve their business. Lord Young, employment relations minister, said that being a boss can be both challenging and rewarding but added that knowledge of employment law does not have to be one of those challenges thanks to this tool.

He also claimed that the online study would also help BIS to identify gaps in people’s knowledge.

The survey categorizes Bosses into one of the following four types:

1.      Starting Out – Is a boss who is broadly unaware of their employment obligations and 33% of leaders surveyed fell into this category.

2.      Focused on Business – These bosses are aware that they have obligations but don’t feel confident in carrying them out and have several other priorities to juggle too. 19% of leaders question fell into this category.

3.      The Delegator – Theses bosses understand obligations but believe that someone else should ensure that laws are adhered to. 13% fitted into this category.

4.      Covered and Confident – These bosses understand their obligations, act on them and make use of free guidance. 34% of leaders are like this.

Founder of  lovethoseshoes.com Glen Berd, who tried out Which boss are you?, said that the program really helps managers to keep up with changes in employment law and develop areas of their business too. If you would like to find out what kind of boss you are visit  www.businesslink.gov.uk/whichbossareyou
