NewsroomLean expert 'Develop your employees'An expert in Lean thinking is encouraging bosses to develop their employees’ skills as it will benefit their businesses. Talking at a Developing People with Capability for Lean workshop, former operations director and human resources manager for Toyota North America David Verble claimed that the chief role of a manager should be to coach and cultivate their talent not just order them about. Verble also said the key objective of Lean was not only implement it but to improve your company, build the quality of your staff and meet the customer’s needs. “Do you want employees just performing to task or performing to purpose?” Lean Blog quotes him as saying. He said that managers should encourage their staff by helping them find their sense of purpose in the company and that staff should not just be made to work to tasks or a job description. Doing this motivates employees to do the beneficial tasks by using their initiative. Verble also claimed that control is not an effective model. He also suggested that a job should not be an end, with a few tasks, but a tool through which the organization’s goals are accomplished.
