NewsroomSmall firms demand building work VAT cutA group that represents small businesses wants the VAT on building work to be reduced to 5% to kick-start the industry. The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), which represents the UK’s small traders, called on the government to make the cut, which would take some of the weight of small businesses’ shoulders. North Wales regional organiser for FSB Mike Learmond said the VAT cut would be a positive and direct move which would bolster the sector. He claimed that it would encourage more people to have work done on houses and added that the housing market was the lifeblood of the industry. This policy was one of FSB’s key objectives in its general election manifesto for 2010. It is also called for a national insurance refund on new jobs in smaller companies and for alternative ways to finance small firms.
